How to Make Your Kitchen Child-Safe

Handy Tips On Maintaining Your New Shade Sail

by Rodney Cook

A shade sail makes a great investment for your home, allowing you to enjoy your outside space all year around whilst keeping your family safe from the dangers of sunburn and the nuisance of sudden summer showers.  New shade sails are built to last, and yours should last a long time if you maintain it properly.  Here are some top tips on how to look after your new shade sail.

Installation

Many shade sails fail simply because they have not been installed properly.  Incorrect installation can lead to undue strain and load being placed on fixings during windy weather, leaving the shade sail and its fixings open to damage.  It is therefore advisable to have your shade sail installed professionally, rather than opting for the DIY route.  Your supplier will offer an installation service too, so remember to ask them about it when ordering your new shade sail.

Regular cleaning

Your shade sail will spend much of its life out in the open.  This means that the fabric will be open to staining from bird droppings and fallen leaves, and it may also be colonised by mildew and mould that can leave black staining that's hard to remove.

You should clean your shade sail every few weeks to prevent damage to the fabric.  To do this, simply make up a mild solution of washing-up liquid and warm water, scrub the shade sail with the solution, and rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.

Removal and storage when not in use

Shade sails are designed to withstand most weather conditions, including strong sunlight, heavy rain and high winds.  However, you can increase your shade sail's longevity by taking it down when it is not in use or when storms are forecast.  Allow your shade sail to dry thoroughly before taking it down, and place it somewhere dry until you need it again.  If possible, store your shade sail in a special cover to prevent damage from rodents and to keep spiders and other creepy crawlies out of it.

In summary

You can keep your new shade sail in great condition and extend its life by following the tips given above.  Have your shade sail professionally installed, clean it regularly, and take it down when rough weather is forecast or if you're not planning on using it for a while.
