If your current garden layout and features aren't really suitable for you and your household's needs, here are a few things you can do to make this area of your property more family-friendly.
Opt for an artificial lawn
When children run around on a real grass lawn, playing football, cricket, and other games, the grass can quickly become damaged. The wear and tear resulting from these activities can leave it with bare patches that require repair and re-seeding. Natural lawns also need to be mowed, watered and fertilised regularly, particularly during the summer months. All of this takes a huge amount of time and effort. If you want to spend your days off with your children rather than waste them maintaining your garden, it may be worth purchasing an artificial lawn.
These are exceptionally hard-wearing and as such, are able to withstand all of the wear and tear that's caused by children playing on it. They're also very low-maintenance; the only thing you need to do to keep this type of lawn clean and in good condition is to brush it about once a fortnight. And because artificial lawns are usually made from permeable materials, rainwater moves through them into the soil underneath and in doing so, helps to wash away any accumulated dirt and grime. This also makes them more hygienic than natural grass (an important point to note if your children are very young and are therefore inclined to forget to wash their hands after playing outdoors).
Add a deck
If you want to enjoy quality time outdoors with your family, it's a good idea to invest in a timber deck for your garden area. This will provide you and your loved ones with a space in which you can eat meals, play games and simply enjoy each other's company. It also serves as a comfortable, convenient area from which to sit and supervise your little ones as they run around the lawn.
If you decide to have a wooden deck constructed on your property, it's important to make sure that your chosen timber deck builders understand the needs of your family. If your children love visiting the playground, you might, for example, want to ask the construction firm to design a built-in swing on the deck for them. It may also be a worth asking them to construct an integrated, lockable storage area within the decking area so that you can safely stow away things like toys, inflatable pools, picnic blankets and other outdoor items that you and your family regularly use during the warmer months.
